Metallurgical coke is an important raw material in the process of blast furnace ironmaking, etc. It has the following advantages:

First, physical properties;

High strength

 Metallurgical coke must withstand the huge pressure of the upper charge in the blast furnace. High-quality metallurgical coke has a high crushing strength, and can maintain a complete block structure during transportation, loading and decline in the blast furnace, and will not be easily broken into small particles. For example, its crushing strength index (M40) is usually high, generally reaching about 75%-85%, which means that most of the coke after a certain mechanical action, the particle size can still be maintained in the appropriate range, so as to ensure the permeability of the blast furnace column.


Appropriate size

The particle size distribution of metallurgical coke is reasonable. Its particle size is generally between 25-80mm, and this particle size range of coke can form a material column with good permeability in the blast furnace. The larger particle size can ensure that there is enough space between the coke, so that the gas (such as hot air) can pass smoothly; The smaller particle size can be filled in the gap of the larger particle size coke, so that the material column structure is more compact, so as to improve the overall stability of the charge in the blast furnace

Porosity suitability

Metallurgical coke has a certain porosity, generally about 40%-50%. These pores provide good sites for chemical reactions in the blast furnace. For example, in the process of iron making, oxygen from the hot air can enter the interior of the coke through these pores and react with the carbon in the coke to produce carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide.


Second, the chemical properties;

 High fixed carbon content
- The fixed carbon content of metallurgical coke is high, generally more than 80%-85%. Fixed carbon is the carbon remaining after removing volatiles and ash when the coke is heated by isolated air at high temperature. In the process of blast furnace ironmaking, fixed carbon is the main reducing agent and heating agent. The metallurgical coke with high fixed carbon content can provide sufficient heat to ensure that the temperature in the blast furnace is maintained at a suitable level (such as the temperature of the air outlet area can reach 1800-2000 ° C), and can also produce enough reducing gases such as carbon monoxide to reduce the iron oxide in the iron ore to metallic iron.

Low sulfur and phosphorus content
- The sulfur content of high-quality metallurgical coke is low, generally below 0.6%-1.0%. Sulfur is a harmful element in the process of blast furnace ironmaking, it will enter the pig iron, make the pig iron produce hot brittleness, reduce the quality of pig iron. Metallurgical coke with low sulfur content helps to reduce sulfur content in pig iron and produce high quality pig iron.

Good reactivity and post-reaction strength
The reactivity (CRI) of metallurgical coke is a measure of the ability of coke to react with carbon dioxide, and the appropriate reactivity is conducive to the reaction of coke with carbon dioxide in the blast furnace to produce carbon monoxide, thereby providing reducing gas. Its reactivity is generally about 20%-30%. At the same time, the post-reaction strength of metallurgical coke (CSR) is also very important, and the coke with high post-reaction strength can still maintain a certain strength after reacting with carbon dioxide, and maintain the gas permeability of the material column in the blast furnace. Generally, the post-reaction strength is required to be above 55%-65%.
